What is 1RM?
Your 1RM (One Repetition Maximum) is the heaviest weight you can lift once on a given exercise with correct form. It is the standard measure of strength in powerlifting, weightlifting and hypertrophy training.
Knowing your 1RM lets you calibrate training intensity precisely: working at 85% of 1RM for sets of 3–5 reps builds maximal strength, while 65–75% for 8–12 reps drives muscle hypertrophy.
Why calculate 1RM without testing it?
Actually testing your 1RM is a risky exercise: it requires a very thorough warm-up, a training partner and a good physical baseline. Calculation formulas let you estimate your 1RM from submaximal loads, which is safer and more practical day-to-day.
For example, if you lift 100 kg for 5 clean reps, you can estimate your 1RM around 109–112 kg without ever attempting a true max.
How to use your 1RM to progress
Once your 1RM is estimated, you can plan sessions by intensity zones:
- 90–100% of 1RM : Maximal strength, 1–3 reps, very high intensity
- 80–89% of 1RM : Strength and hypertrophy, 3–6 reps
- 67–79% of 1RM : Hypertrophy, 8–12 reps
- 50–66% of 1RM : Muscular endurance, 15+ reps
The limits of calculation formulas
Every 1RM formula is a statistical estimate. Accuracy drops sharply above 10 reps, because muscular endurance takes an increasing share of the performance. For a reliable estimate, use loads you can move for 3 to 8 reps with clean technique.
The 4 formulas (Brzycki, Epley, Lombardi, Mayhew) give slightly different numbers depending on the individual — which is why this calculator shows the average of all 4 as the primary estimate, while still displaying each value separately.
1RM and strength programming
Your 1RM evolves over time. Recalculate every 4–6 weeks to adjust session intensity. A steady rise in your 1RM on the big lifts (squat, bench press, deadlift) is the clearest sign of real strength progress.
