Ectomorph mass-building program: gain weight when you can't
Mass-building program for ectomorphs: high caloric surplus, heavy compounds, minimal cardio. 8-week structured plan.
Why this program?
Ectomorphs (naturally skinny types with a fast metabolism) need a specific approach: aggressive caloric surplus (+500 to +800 kcal/day), heavy compounds, minimal cardio, high recovery. This program is calibrated exactly for that profile: 3 short sessions per week (60 min) on the big compounds, priority on progressive overload.

Progression over 8 weeks
60–65% 1RM
Master range of motion and control on every rep. Do not load yet.
70–75% 1RM
Add +2.5 kg once all reps clear across 2 consecutive sessions.
75–80% 1RM
Aim for the top of the rep range. Add one set on compounds.
80–85% 1RM
Reduce reps, push loads on the main lifts.
60% 1RM
Active recovery. Prime the next progression block.
Progressive overload principle
Add load whenever you clear all prescribed reps across 2 consecutive sessions. For compounds: +2.5 kg. For isolation: +1–2 kg. That's the only principle that guarantees continuous progress.
Frequently asked questions
How much caloric surplus for an ectomorph?
+500 to +800 kcal/day above TDEE. Ectomorphs need more surplus than other body types because of a faster metabolism.
How much protein for an ectomorph?
1.8–2.2 g/kg/day. Nothing higher — the extra calories should come mainly from carbs and healthy fats.
Should I do cardio if I'm ectomorph?
Minimum. 1 short LISS session per week for cardiovascular health, no more. Cardio slows down mass gain in ectomorphs.
