This guide gives you the complete method, no hand-waving.
RPE in one sentence
RPE in strength training = how many reps you could have done more at the end of your set.
That's the clearest and most operational definition. The more reps in reserve, the lower the RPE. Total failure (0 reps in reserve) = RPE 10.

RPE vs RIR: interchangeable in practice

RIR (Reps In Reserve) is the direct inverse of RPE for strength training. Both concepts measure the exact same thing. RPE is more used in powerlifting and strength, RIR more in hypertrophy. In practice, they're interchangeable — use the one that feels more natural.
What RPE to aim for by goal
Hypertrophy (muscle development)
- Warm-up: RPE 4–6 (2–3 approach sets).
- Working sets: RPE 7–8 on the first sets of an exercise.
- Last set: RPE 8–9 ("push a bit" on the final set).
- Avoid: systematic training at RPE 10 — accumulated fatigue degrades gains within 4–6 weeks.
Pure strength (1–5 reps)
- Accumulation (volume weeks): RPE 7–8 on working sets.
- Intensification (peak weeks): RPE 8–9.
- 1RM tests: RPE 10, but reserved for 1–2 sessions per 8–12 week cycle.
Muscular endurance (15–30 reps)
- Working sets: RPE 7–9.
- Slow tempo and technique control more important than load.
Deload (recovery week)
- Working sets: RPE 5–6.
- Goal: full neuromuscular recovery, not progression.
How to estimate your RPE correctly
RPE estimation is a skill you learn. A few methods to calibrate:
Method 1: "One-more-rep test"
At the end of your last set, rack the bar for 10 seconds then try to do 1 more rep.
- You get it easily → your estimated RPE was too high (you said 8, you were at 7).
- You get it with difficulty → correct estimate.
- You can't get it → you were at real RPE 9–10.
Method 2: "Bar speed"
At low RPE (4–6), concentric speed (the way up) is fast and consistent. At RPE 8–9, the last rep slows visibly. At RPE 10, the dying rep no longer crosses the sticking point.
If you film your sets from a side angle, you can learn to recognize these patterns visually.
Method 3: "Technique"
At RPE 6–7, technique stays impeccable from start to end. At RPE 8, slight precision loss on the last rep (knees caving slightly, bar drifting, etc.). At RPE 9–10, marked degradation — that's the signal to stop, not to keep going.
The 5 typical RPE mistakes
1. The beginner who underestimates their RPE
Symptom: you say "RPE 9 easy" on a load where your technique stays impeccable and your bar speed constant. Reality: you're probably at RPE 6–7. The sensation of high effort is new — you're confusing it with "near failure". Fix: calibrate via the one-more-rep test for 4–6 weeks.
2. The advanced lifter overestimating their sets
Symptom: you say "RPE 7–8 comfortable" on sets that leave you gassed and where the last rep clearly slows. Reality: you're probably at RPE 9. Fix: radical honesty. You don't have to push harder, but stop lying on the counter.
3. Programming at RPE 10 every session
Symptom: "no pain no gain", every set to failure. Consequence: cumulative fatigue, plateau at 4–6 weeks, potential injury. Fix: 80–90% of the year's sets are done at RPE 7–9. RPE 10 is reserved for specific moments (tests, cycle peak).
4. Confusing pain and RPE
Symptom: you interpret a joint discomfort as "high RPE". Reality: pain ≠ muscular effort. Joint discomfort is a warning signal that has nothing to do with RPE. Fix: if you feel joint pain, stop the set, see a physio or sports doctor. Don't "force the RPE".
5. Ignoring daily variability
Symptom: you expect the same RPE at the same load every session. Reality: the same load can be RPE 7 on a rested Monday and RPE 9 on a tired Friday. Fix: program in target RPE, not in absolute loads. That's exactly what RPE exists for.

Observation: RPE rises on successive sets of the same exercise (intra-session fatigue). That's normal and programmed.
