What RDL does better
1. Maximal hamstring activation
McAllister 2014 study: RDL produces highest hamstring EMG activation among tested exercises (RDL, good morning, glute-ham raise, leg curl). RDL intensely recruits biceps femoris + semitendinosus under stretch.
2. Complete posterior chain development
RDL = hamstrings + glutes + spinal erectors + middle traps (isometric) in one movement. Rare compound that works so many muscle groups in parallel.
3. Relative safety
Bar stays close to body (short lever arm on vertebrae). Result: less lumbar compression vs good morning at equivalent load. RDL can be safely loaded heavy (150-200 kg possible in advanced).
4. Transfer to conventional deadlift
RDL pattern = top phase of conventional deadlift. Excellent exercise to strengthen lockout and improve heavy deadlift technique.
What good morning does better
1. Lower back stimulus in amplitude
Long lever arm on spine = intense work of spinal erectors (especially thoracic part) in isometric. Useful to strengthen lower back as accessory, notably to improve heavy squat.
2. Hamstring stimulus in full amplitude
Good morning with straight low back allows maximal hip flexion without limitation from arm position (hands are not gripped at thigh level as in RDL).
3. Progression without heavy equipment
At equivalent relative loads, good morning requires 60-70% of RDL. Useful in gym limited in equipment: lighter loads for comparable posterior chain stimulus.
4. Squat carry-over strengthening
Good morning specifically strengthens the "inclined torso" pattern of heavy squat. Powerlifters use it as key accessory to improve squat exit from the hole.

Good morning intimidates many lifters. Progression over 8-12 weeks to safely tame it.
Phase 1 (W1-W3): no load
- Empty bar good morning (20 kg): 3 × 12 (technique focus, straight back, clean hip hinge)
- Cable pull-through: 3 × 12-15 (technical hip hinge accessory)
Phase 2 (W4-W8): moderate loads
- Barbell good morning: 4 × 8-10 (load 40-60 kg, strict back)
- Barbell RDL: 4 × 6-10 (main compound in parallel)
Phase 3 (W9-W12): heavy loads

Common mistakes to avoid
On RDL
- Squat instead of hip hinge. Beginners bend knees like in squat. RDL is a hip hinge: knees almost locked (5-10° flexion), hip moves.
- Bar moving away from body. Long lever arm = lumbar risk + inefficiency. Keep bar sliding against thighs on descent and ascent.
- Amplitude too low for mobility. Descending below safe position = lumbar rounding = injury risk. Stop at your individual mobility limit.
On good morning
- Involuntary rounded back. Loss of lumbar neutrality = severe injury risk. Stay strict straight back from start to end. Do not add load if you cannot.
- Amplitude too low. Descending too low (torso parallel to floor or more) = ultra-vulnerable position for spine. Stop at 60-70° inclination.
- Bar too high on neck. Bar on neck (cervical) = cervical stress + stability loss. Bar on middle traps as in back squat.
