20 women in 500 kcal/day caloric deficit, 4 weeks, 3 steady-state cardio sessions per week (1h each). Group 1: fasted morning cardio. Group 2: cardio after breakfast.
Result: identical fat mass loss (1.6 kg vs 1.0 kg), non-statistically significant difference. Zero lean mass loss in both groups.
Conclusion: when caloric deficit and training protocol are matched, timing (fasted or fed) has no impact on body composition.
Vieira 2016 meta-analysis: acute lipid oxidation
27 studies, 273 subjects. Result: lipid oxidation during exercise significantly higher fasted vs fed.

Long term, regular fasted training improves insulin sensitivity and metabolic flexibility (ability to switch between energy substrates). Useful for lifters with suboptimal metabolic profile.
What fed cardio offers in practice
1. Maintained performance
Available muscle glycogen + blood glucose = optimal performance. Speed, power, endurance: all improved vs fasted on medium-long sessions.
2. Reinforced muscle preservation
Recent amino acid intake (meal proteins) = minimal muscle catabolism risk. Important in recomposition phase or prolonged cut.
3. Bulking compatibility
In bulking, cardio is a cardiovascular health tool, not a fat loss tool. Fed = caloric preservation + intact recovery = compatible with hypertrophy goal.
