Leg press or hack squat: the two dominant machine compounds for quadriceps. Often used as alternatives to barbell squat, but they differ significantly in muscle activation, lumbar safety, and effective amplitude. Here is when to choose which.
What hack squat does better
1. Superior quadriceps activation
Comparative EMG studies: hack squat produces 15-20% more vastus lateralis and vastus medialis activation vs leg press at equivalent relative loads. Vertical torso position + deeper knee flexion = maximal quadriceps stretch.
2. Quadriceps stretch in amplitude
Bottom of hack squat = quadriceps under maximal stretch. Muscle recruits more in lengthened position (stretch-mediated hypertrophy concept). Leg press limits this stretch due to pelvis/thigh angle.
3. Transfer to barbell squat
Hack squat pattern close to free squat: vertical torso, forward knees, quad dominant. If you are preparing return to barbell squat, hack squat = best bridge.
4. Accessory glute stimulation
End range of hack squat (full extension) = glute activation peak. Less pronounced, but present. Leg press very little glute work.
What leg press does better
1. Absolute load
Horizontal or 45° leg press = 300-500 kg loads realistic in advanced. Hack squat typically caps at 200-300 kg. If the goal is maximal load for neural stimulus, press wins.
2. Lumbar safety
Pelvis fixed against seat on press. No risk of lumbar flexion under load. Hack squat: slight risk of hip lift at end of descent = compressive lumbar stress. Useful with back injury history.
3. Accessibility in commercial gym
Almost all gyms have a leg press. Hack squat missing in small gyms. Press = universal option.
4. Safe high-rep endurance
Sets of 20-30 reps on press = safe even in fatigue. On hack squat, fatigue increases risk of hip lift. Press better suited to Von Sydow-type protocols, extreme drop sets.

- Barbell squat: 4 × 5-8 (main compound)
- Hack squat: 4 × 8-10 (machine quadriceps compound)
- Romanian deadlift: 3 × 10 (hamstrings)

Foot position: impact on targeting
On leg press
- Low + narrow feet: quadriceps dominant (vastus lateralis especially)
- High + wide feet: glutes + hamstrings increased
- Neutral feet: general balance
On hack squat
- Low feet: quadriceps ultra-dominant, increased knee stress
- High feet: glutes increased, moderate quadriceps
- Neutral feet: optimal quadriceps targeting, safe for knee
Adapt to your priority goal. Most lifters stay in neutral position.
Common mistakes to avoid
On leg press
- Knees caving in (valgus). PCL compression. Actively push knees outward, aligned with toes.
- Truncated amplitude by ego-loading. 5 reps at half range = lost stimulus. Reduce to 60% of load and go full range (thighs touch chest).
- Full knee lockout at top. Loss of muscle tension + hyperextension risk. Stay in 90-95% extension.
On hack squat
- Hip lift at bottom. Loss of pelvic neutrality = lumbar stress. Reduce amplitude to the point where hips stay glued.
- Excessive knee travel forward. Depending on morphology and foot position, knees naturally travel forward. Stay in comfortable range, without forcing.
- Descent too fast. Loss of eccentric work = loss of hypertrophic stimulus. Cadence: 2-3 sec descent, 1 sec ascent.
Final verdict
Neither press nor hack squat is "superior" absolutely. The choice depends on context.
- Hack squat: superior quadriceps activation (+15-20% EMG), maximal stretch, squat transfer, priority quadriceps targeting
- Leg press: higher absolute load, lumbar safety, universal accessibility, high-rep endurance
