Jump sport, sprint, running, gymnastics : squat directly transfers to motor patterns of vertical propulsion. No movement in sport or daily life resembles leg press.
3. Bone density
Heavy loads in standing position stimulate femur, pelvis, and spine bone density. Press (seated/lying) does not have this effect.
4. Balanced legs + glutes + trunk development
Squat trains lower body + core in one movement. Programmatically, more efficient than segmenting press (quads) + hip thrust (glutes) + planks (core).
What leg press does better
1. Load heavy without lumbar stress
Under heavy loads, squat compresses lumbar spine. Leg press removes this constraint - useful for intermediate with tired back at end of session, or lumbar injury history.
2. Quadriceps volume without systemic fatigue
A set of 12-15 press reps fatigues quadriceps without CNS or trunk stabilization recruitment. Useful as accessory after heavy squat to bump quadriceps volume without compromising global recovery.
3. Safety for fragile knee
Escamilla 2001 : no ACL force detected in press. For lifter with cruciate injury history, press is a loaded quadriceps access without additional risk.

Common mistakes to avoid
On squat
- Truncated range (half squat). Descend below parallel (femurs parallel to floor at minimum) to fully activate glutes + hamstrings.
- Torso too forward. Load toward lower back + glutes in stretched position. Stay more vertical if focusing on quadriceps.
- Knees caving in. Sign of weak abductors/gluteus medius. Force knees to track along toe axis.
On leg press
- Truncated range by ego. Loading 300 kg and moving 15 cm stimulates nothing. Descend until knees form 90 degree angle (or more if mobility).
- Locking knees at top. Full extension under heavy load stresses ligaments. Keep slight flex.
- Glutes lifting off backrest. Sign that range is excessive for your mobility - reduce depth.
