What Is Whey Protein?
Whey is a protein derived from cheese making. When milk coagulates, two protein fractions separate: casein (80% of milk protein) which forms the curd, and whey (20%) which stays in the liquid. That liquid is then filtered and dried to obtain whey powder.
Amino acid profile
Whey is a complete protein: it contains all 9 essential amino acids, with a particularly high concentration of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA: leucine, isoleucine, valine). Leucine is the main trigger of muscle protein synthesis.
Leucine content:
- Whey concentrate: about 10–11 g of leucine per 100 g of protein

What it doesn't do

The goal isn't to "take whey" — it's to hit sufficient daily protein intake. Research indicates:
- Minimum for hypertrophy: 1.6 g/kg of bodyweight per day

Morning (if breakfast is low in protein): if your morning meal is low in protein (cereal, coffee), a whey shake is useful to avoid staying in deficit all morning.

Some brands artificially inflate the protein analysis by adding cheap amino acids (whey creatination, glycine addition). Look for brands that display the full essential amino acid profile — not just the raw protein percentage.
2. Label transparency
A good whey states: protein source (whey concentrate or isolate), amino acid profile, sugar content, fat content. Avoid "proprietary blends" that hide proportions.
3. Third-party certification
For competing athletes, look for anti-doping certifications (Informed Sport, Cologne List). For hobbyist lifters, it's less critical but a guarantee of manufacturing quality.

Mass gainers are often a bad deal: you're mostly paying for maltodextrin (cheap carbs). Buying whey concentrate + a banana is cheaper and more nutritious.
